The United Nationsis committed to fighting Climate Ghange. While a concensus is emerging that a 2°C increase in global average temperature is inevitable, many experts fear that we are already facing a minimum temeprature increase of 4°C. This will have severe consequences, with more droughts, floods and other extreme weather events; in addition sea-levels will rise due to thermal expansion of ocean water and melting of Greenland and Antartic galciers.
In this context, the UN is helping to fund the response of poorer countries as they try to adapt to or mitigate the effects of climate change (Finance pour la guerre contre le rèchaufement climatique)
Local branches of the UNA are also taking part in actions to help gain finance to tackle this problem: Activités des UNAs sur le financement de la guerre contre le réchauffement climatique
A graphic illustration of the changes taking place in Europe can be seen by looking at the retreat of glaciers in the Parc des Ecrins Évolutions climatiques : des suivis dans les Écrins
Luxembourg has issued its statement under the United Nations Framework Convetion on Climate Change (National Communications of Luxembourg under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) This shows that Luxembourg must deal with many challenges if it is to improve its response to the looming Climate Change crisis.
A major contributor to Luxembourg's poor showing in terms of C02 is the price of vehicle fuels. This document shows that Luxembourg's fuel prices are amongst the lowest in Europe (in the richest country in Europe!)
Some faith is being placed in the concept of Carbon Trading. It is not clear at this time whether this constitutes a useful tool towards reducing CO2 emissions.
A delegation from the Committee of ALNU had a meeting in september 2010 with the Minister for Sustainable Development and Infrastructures, Mr. Claude Wiseler for an exchange of views on a strong action from Luxembourg to combate climate change here in Luxembourg. This report gives an overview of the useful discussions about the evolution of the situation from 1990-2009 and the projections of the situation towards 2020.
